    The Science

    Understanding the Neurobiology

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not merely a deficit of attention; it is a complex dysregulation of the brain's executive functions. For many adults, this condition remains undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for decades, often masked by high intelligence or compensatory coping mechanisms.

At Synergistic Psychiatry, we treat patients aged 18–60 who often present with "high-functioning" ADHD. These are professionals, students, and parents who may have navigated life successfully but at a tremendous internal cost—experiencing chronic overwhelm, procrastination, and emotional dysregulation.

    Symptoms

The Core Symptoms of Adult ADHD

Adult ADHD presents differently than childhood ADHD. Hyperactivity often internalizes, becoming a restless mind rather than a restless body. Our diagnostic process evaluates the three primary domains of executive dysfunction:

    Inattention & Disorganization

    • Difficulty sustaining focus on non-preferred tasks.
    • Chronic procrastination followed by "panic-fueled" productivity.
    • Poor time blindness (underestimating how long tasks take).
    • Frequent misplacement of items or forgetfulness in daily activities.

    Impulsivity

    • Impulsive spending or decision-making.
    • Interrupting others during conversation.
    • Difficulty delaying gratification.
    • Sensory seeking or risk-taking behaviors.

    Emotional Dysregulation

    • Low frustration tolerance.
    • Quick shifts in mood (often reactive to external events).
    • Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (intense emotional pain related to perceived rejection).

    Our Process

    Our Diagnostic Standard

We do not rely on rapid checklists. A diagnosis of ADHD at Synergistic Psychiatry is a rigorous clinical process. It requires establishing that symptoms have been present since childhood and are currently impairing your functioning in multiple domains (work, home, relationships).

We utilize comprehensive psychiatric evaluations to confirm an ADHD diagnosis. This process includes:

    01

    Clinical Interview

A detailed history of your symptoms, developmental history, and medical background.

    02

    Standardized Screening Tools

Validated neuro-psychological questionnaires to quantify symptom severity.

    03

    Differential Diagnosis

We screen carefully to ensure symptoms are not better explained by anxiety, depression, or other medical conditions. Note: We focus exclusively on treating ADHD and do not treat active schizophrenia, severe substance use requiring detox, or court-ordered evaluations.

    Clinical evaluation process

    Our Clinical Standards

At Synergistic Psychiatry, all evaluations are conducted by licensed psychiatric providers trained in adult ADHD assessment and evidence-based treatment.

Our evaluations follow the DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria for ADHD and established psychiatric guidelines to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment recommendations.

When clinically appropriate, FDA-cleared computerized attention testing may be incorporated to provide objective data that supports the diagnostic process.

Our goal is to provide thoughtful, responsible ADHD care that prioritizes diagnostic accuracy, patient safety, and long-term treatment success.
